How Does Professional Head Lice Removal Work? Why Do We Call It Removal and Not Treatment?

After 21 years of providing professional head lice removal and thorough head checks, one thing I’ve learned is that lice can be very easy to miss and extremely difficult to remove.

Parents often tell me, “I checked and I don’t see anything.” But a professional head check involves much more than simply looking through the hair. A thorough comb-through can uncover lice and eggs that are easily missed with a visual check.

There’s also a reason I call what we do head lice removal rather than head lice treatment.

Putting a product on someone’s head is a treatment. It doesn’t necessarily mean the lice and eggs have been removed. We actually go through the hair and physically remove what’s there.

That’s the difference.

What Does a Professional Head Check Involve?

At Louse Calls, we perform a full comb-through of the entire head using conditioner and a professional lice comb. The hair is carefully sectioned and checked for lice and eggs.

If one person has lice, we recommend checking everyone in the household, since another family member may have an early case without realizing it.

How Does Professional Head Lice Removal Work?

Our approach is non-toxic and completely manual. We carefully work through the hair and physically remove the lice and eggs.

For an average case with medium-length hair, the removal process usually takes about an hour and averages around $155, although the time and cost can vary depending on the hair and the amount of work involved.

Why Do We Call It Lice Removal Instead of Lice Treatment?

The words may sound interchangeable, but to me there is an important difference.

A lice treatment can mean applying a product to the hair. Lice removal describes what we actually do: carefully combing through the hair and physically removing the lice and eggs we find.

After more than two decades of doing this work, I believe the careful checking and removal process is one of the most important parts of helping a family get through a case of head lice.

Do I Need to Clean My Entire House?

No. You generally do not need to turn your home upside down or spend hours spraying and deep-cleaning everything.

Head lice primarily live on the human scalp and spread mainly through direct hair-to-hair contact. Your technician will explain the limited household items that may need attention and what you should do after your appointment.

For additional information about head lice and preventing their spread, see the CDC’s guidance on head lice.

We also recommend a follow-up check 7–10 days later to make sure everything is progressing as expected.

Experience Makes a Difference

After helping thousands of families since 2005, I’ve learned that the earlier lice is found, the easier it usually is to handle.
