The Wrong Bug in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time
Why Some Children Get Pubic Lice in Their Hair, Eyebrows, and Eyelashes — And How They Differ From Head Lice
When parents hear the words pubic lice, they immediately think of one part of the body. That’s why it can be shocking when pubic lice are found in a child’s hair, eyebrows, or eyelashes instead of the pubic area. While most families are familiar with head lice, far fewer realize that pubic lice can occasionally appear on the scalp and around the eyes. In more than 21 years and approximately 25,000 family lice cases, I’ve only encountered this in about 10–12 families. It’s rare—but it does happen.
The first thing I tell parents is:
We will get through this together- don’t worry or panic. The biggest misconception is that pubic lice automatically mean something dirty, inappropriate, or shameful. In my experience, it’s often simply the wrong bug in the wrong place at the wrong time. When families receive an unexpected diagnosis, education and a treatment plan can help replace fear with confidence.
What Do Pubic Lice Look Like?
Pubic lice look very different from head lice. They are rounder and have large claw-like legs, giving them a crab-like appearance. Their eggs are also slightly different. They tend to be a bit smaller and rounder than head lice eggs, although the difference can be difficult to recognize without seeing them side-by-side.
Why Are They Found on the Head and Eyelashes?
The honest answer is that nobody knows for sure. One theory is that because young children lack mature pubic hair, the insects may settle in other hair-bearing areas such as the eyelashes and scalp. In my experience, eyelash involvement is very common, and I often find eggs attached directly to the lashes. After treating approximately 25,000 families, I can tell you these cases are real. What I cannot tell you with certainty is why they occur in some children and not others.
Why Correct Identification Matters
At Louse Calls, every pubic lice case we’ve encountered was first mistaken by the family or school for head lice. One recent parent texted me the day after treatment and asked if it was normal to still be finding lice.
My response:
“With head lice, no. But this is pubic lice, so yes.”
That one sentence explains the difference.
Unlike most head lice cases, which we can often resolve in a single visit with minimal follow-up, pubic lice infestations on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes typically fall outside the scope of a routine head lice case. These infestations often require multiple visits, barrier work, ongoing monitoring, and follow-up care between appointments.
While head lice treatment is often straightforward, pubic lice cases tend to be much more of a team effort between our company and the family. In some cases, I also recommend seeing an ophthalmologist when the eyelashes are heavily affected.
Why They’re More Difficult to Remove
Pubic lice are built differently than head lice. Their claw-like legs can grip hair and skin very effectively, making them more difficult to remove.
Because they are often harder to see, infestations may go unnoticed for months before they are correctly identified. One recent case involving a 2-year-old child had likely been present for nearly three months before discovered.
The good news is that while these infestations are more challenging than head lice, they are manageable and treatable. Even though pubic lice on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes fall outside the scope of a routine head lice case, we have successfully resolved every case we’ve encountered over the past 21 years.
Final Thoughts
I can confidently say that pubic lice on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes are rare, but very real. The most important step is proper identification. Once you know what you’re dealing with, you can create the right plan to stop the life cycle and eliminate the infestation. Sometimes it’s simply the wrong bug in the wrong place at the wrong time.
